Charles Leclerc Signs Long-Term Ferrari Contract

Charles Leclerc has renewed his contract with Ferrari, confirming his long-term commitment to the Formula 1 team with a polished social media video that emphasized his emotional bond with the Scuderia. The 28-year-old has been part of Ferrari’s system since 2016, joined their driver academy after being identified as a talent at 14, and has raced for the team in Formula 1 since 2019. In his message, Leclerc described joining Ferrari as “living a dream” and called the team “family,” underscoring how closely his identity has become tied to the Italian outfit. He said the dream is still alive and that he is proud to keep pursuing it with Ferrari, referring to the shared goal of winning the world championship together.
Despite the renewal, the central challenge remains unchanged: Ferrari and Leclerc are still chasing a title that has so far eluded them. Since joining the team in 2019, Leclerc has established himself as one of the sport’s standout drivers, widely regarded as among the fastest over a single lap, but his results in terms of victories have not matched his reputation. He has won eight grands prix with Ferrari, a modest return for a driver of his caliber at Formula 1’s most successful team. The situation reflects Ferrari’s broader struggles, as the team has endured years of underachievement relative to its history and resources.
Ferrari’s latest contract move appears aimed at securing one of its most valuable assets before the driver market becomes more unsettled. Sources at Ferrari say Leclerc’s previous deal was not expiring this year, meaning the new agreement is an extension rather than the activation of an existing option. That suggests he may already have been tied to the team through the end of next year, similar to teammate Lewis Hamilton, though there were reports that Leclerc could have had an exit route depending on Ferrari’s performance. Regardless of the exact structure, Ferrari clearly wanted to remove uncertainty and keep him in place.
Leclerc’s options elsewhere also appear limited. Mercedes are expected to retain Kimi Antonelli and George Russell into next year at least, unless a major opportunity opens for Max Verstappen, whom Toto Wolff has reportedly long admired. McLaren, meanwhile, are committed to Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. In that context, remaining with Ferrari looks like the most practical and competitive choice for Leclerc, with industry talk suggesting the deal could run as long as 2029.
The extension signals mutual belief: Ferrari wants to build around Leclerc, and Leclerc still believes the dream of a Ferrari world title is worth pursuing. Yet the partnership enters another chapter under the shadow of an unfulfilled promise that has defined much of both his career and Ferrari’s recent era.
