T20 Blast: Surrey Cruise Past Middlesex by Eight Wickets

Ollie Pope led Surrey to a comfortable victory over Middlesex in a South Group T20 Blast derby at The Oval, scoring an unbeaten 51 from 33 balls as the hosts chased down 131 with ease. Jason Roy made 46 and shared a second-wicket partnership of 74 with Pope, helping Surrey recover momentum after back-to-back defeats and secure their 12th win in 14 Blast meetings against Middlesex.
Surrey’s bowlers had set up the win by restricting Middlesex to 130 for 7 after Sam Curran won the toss and chose to field. The seam attack controlled the innings throughout, with Reece Topley taking 1 for 21 and Sean Abbott 2 for 16 in standout spells. Middlesex struggled to build meaningful partnerships and were reduced to 54 for 5 early on, with wickets falling regularly under pressure.
Luke Hollman provided the main resistance for Middlesex for the second match in a row, finishing unbeaten on 31 from 29 balls. Ryan Higgins added 27 in a 47-run stand, but the visitors never looked close to posting a competitive total. Adam Rossington hit two boundaries in the powerplay before falling to Topley, while Max Holden, Ben Geddes and Josh de Caires all departed as Surrey kept control.
Jordan Clark also played a key role, dismissing Holden and finishing with 2 for 31, while Curran’s side maintained tight discipline despite some late lower-order resistance. Sebastian Morgan struck a boundary off the final ball of the innings, but Middlesex’s total remained well below par on a surface that offered Surrey’s attack plenty of assistance.
In reply, Surrey started confidently. Will Jacks made 24 from 17 after surviving an early chance, and Roy helped carry the side past 50 at the end of the powerplay. With little scoreboard pressure, Surrey’s top order was able to pace the chase patiently before accelerating.
Roy fell short of a half-century when he was caught at mid-on for 46, but Pope finished the job in style. He targeted Morgan with two sixes over the leg side before bringing up his fifty with a boundary and sealing a dominant win for Surrey. The result put Surrey’s T20 Blast campaign back on track and underlined their superiority in this local rivalry.
