Former Loanee Sammon Retires: Ipswich Town News

Conor Sammon, the former Town loanee and Republic of Ireland international, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39. Sammon spent the first half of the club’s 2014/15 play-off campaign on loan with Town, where he made eight starts and 11 substitute appearances and scored once. His career later took him through a long list of clubs across Ireland, England and Scotland, including UCD, Derry City, Kilmarnock, Wigan Athletic, Derby County, Rotherham United, Sheffield United, Hearts, Partick Thistle, Motherwell, Falkirk and Alloa Athletic.

In a retirement message posted on LinkedIn, Sammon reflected on fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a professional footballer. He said he felt lucky to have spent 20 years in the game and proud to have represented the Republic of Ireland on nine occasions. He also paid tribute to the people who supported him throughout his career, including his wife Caroline, their daughters Sophia and Louisa, and his wider family.

Sammon described football as giving him much more than a career, saying it taught him discipline, resilience and teamwork while also providing friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. He said he was leaving the game with gratitude and excitement for the next chapter in his life.

Tributes quickly followed from former Town teammates, including Tommy Smith and Christophe Berra. Smith praised Sammon’s career and wished him well for the future, while Berra congratulated him on a successful career and sent his best wishes for what comes next.
