Alonso Homers as Baz Shines for Seven Innings in Orioles’ Win Over Red Sox

Pete Alonso hit a two-run home run and Shane Baz delivered seven strong innings as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-2 on Tuesday night in Boston. The win marked Baltimore’s third straight and snapped a three-game road losing streak. Baz earned his third win of the season after allowing four hits and striking out six over seven innings, his second consecutive start of seven innings. He gave up a leadoff triple to Jarren Duran in the first inning but then settled in, keeping Boston hitless until the fifth and retiring 10 batters in a row during one stretch.
Baltimore took an early lead and never trailed after the first few innings. Coby Mayo tied the game 1-1 in the second with his seventh home run of the season, a shot that initially was ruled a double but was changed to a homer after a video review. Alonso followed in the third inning with his 12th home run of the year, a two-run blast off Connelly Early that sailed over the Green Monster in left field and put the Orioles ahead 3-1. Alonso’s homer gave him 38 RBIs on the season.
Gunnar Henderson also contributed for Baltimore, doubling in the first inning to extend his on-base streak at Fenway Park to 23 games, matching the number of games he has played at the ballpark. The Orioles added another run while keeping pressure on Boston’s pitching throughout the night.
Boston’s offense struggled to generate sustained rallies. Wilyer Abreu and Marcelo Mayer each drove in a run on sacrifice flies, accounting for the Red Sox’s only scoring. Boston fell to 9-20 at home, continuing a difficult season at Fenway Park. Connelly Early, who took the loss and dropped to 5-3, worked 5 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on six hits.
Rico Garcia finished the game for Baltimore, striking out two in the ninth to earn his fourth save. The Orioles’ pitching staff limited Boston to just a few scoring chances after the first inning and helped preserve the road victory.
The teams will meet again Wednesday in the second game of the series. Baltimore is scheduled to start right-hander Chris Bassitt, while Boston will counter with left-hander Payton Tolle.
