French Open 2026: Aryna Sabalenka Beats Naomi Osaka to Reach Quarter-Finals

Aryna Sabalenka produced a commanding performance to defeat Naomi Osaka, using a blend of power, precision and smart shot selection to control the match after a brief early scare. In their meeting in Madrid in April, Osaka had taken the opening set, and she again started strongly this time by breaking Sabalenka in the first service game. But that was the only real moment of trouble for the top seed on serve.

Sabalenka quickly settled, conceding just four points on her serve for the rest of the opening set. Her delivery became increasingly dominant as the match progressed, and she finished with 12 aces compared with Osaka’s two. She also won 83% of points behind her first serve, underlining the authority of her serving throughout the contest.

Osaka, meanwhile, found it difficult to maintain consistent pressure on return and often left herself vulnerable in rallies. Although she created some opportunities, she was pushed to deuce after leading 40-15 in three separate service games during the first set. She landed only 53% of her first serves, a figure that allowed Sabalenka to attack more freely and step inside the baseline to take control of second serves. Sabalenka won 21 points out of 35 on Osaka’s second delivery, a key factor in her ability to dictate play.

Sabalenka’s variety also played an important role in the victory. Rather than relying solely on baseline exchanges, she used clever shot selection to break Osaka’s rhythm. She won 10 of her 11 points at the net and mixed in five drop shots among her 39 winners, showing composure and tactical awareness as well as raw power. That variety helped her avoid being trapped in long, grinding rallies and forced Osaka onto the back foot.

The decisive moment in the opening set came in the 11th game, when Sabalenka made the crucial break before serving out the set to love. From there, the momentum stayed firmly with her. In the second set, Osaka briefly held firm by saving a break point in the fifth game, but Sabalenka continued to apply relentless pressure. Osaka was broken in her next two service games, and Sabalenka sealed the match on match point with a trademark powerful forehand.

The result highlighted Sabalenka’s ability to combine aggression with discipline, while Osaka struggled to cope with the intensity and consistency of the world number one’s game.
