Minnesota GOP Holds Moment of Silence for Derek Chauvin Days After George Floyd Death Anniversary

The Minnesota Republican Party is facing sharp criticism after delegates at its state convention observed a moment of silence for Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd. The tribute reportedly occurred on Saturday morning during the party’s convention in Duluth and lasted about 10 seconds before proceedings continued. Party officials later said the gesture was not part of the planned agenda and was requested by a delegate.
The incident drew immediate backlash because it came just days after the sixth anniversary of Floyd’s death on May 25, 2020, a killing that triggered protests across the United States and around the world and intensified national debates over policing, race, and accountability. Chauvin was convicted of second-degree murder in 2021 and is serving a prison sentence for Floyd’s killing.
Democratic leaders responded quickly. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who led the prosecution against Chauvin, issued a strong statement condemning the moment of silence. Ellison said he was “heartbroken and frankly shocked,” describing the tribute as deeply cruel to Floyd’s family and to people who believe in justice under the law. He said honoring Chauvin dishonors Floyd’s memory and causes renewed pain to his loved ones.
The controversy also follows continued claims from some conservative commentators that Chauvin did not receive a fair trial. Those arguments have fueled renewed calls from some right-wing activists for a presidential pardon, although legal experts note that any federal pardon would not affect Chauvin’s state murder conviction.
The Minnesota GOP has not publicly apologized for the gesture, and the episode has quickly become a political flashpoint in the state as the 2026 election cycle approaches. What was intended to be a routine weekend gathering focused on endorsements and campaign planning has instead become a national story, drawing widespread attention and renewed criticism on social media.
