Today is the last day to file your Income Tax Return, the Federal Revenue Service says

The deadline for submitting Brazil’s Individual Income Tax Return (IRPF) 2026, for the 2025 tax year, ends today, May 29, at 11:59:59 p.m. Taxpayers who miss the deadline will face a penalty of 1% per month on the amount of tax due, with a minimum fine of R$165.74 and a maximum of 20% of the tax owed. After midnight, the system will stop accepting original or amended returns until 9 a.m. on Monday, June 1, 2026.
The Federal Revenue Service advises anyone filing at the last minute to use the pre-filled return, which can speed up the process and help reduce filing errors. Even so, taxpayers remain responsible for checking whether the information in the pre-filled version, which is supplied by third parties, is accurate. If there are discrepancies between amounts reported by employers, service providers, or other sources, the taxpayer must declare the real values they can support with receipts, invoices, or income statements.
Refund payments are also scheduled for today, with the first batch going to taxpayers who filed early and belong to priority groups. A total of R$16 billion in credits will be released to 8.75 million people, making it the largest refund batch ever paid. Deposits will be processed throughout the day, depending on each bank’s timeline, and the Federal Revenue Service advises taxpayers to wait until the end of the day before assuming there was a problem with the transfer.
The tax authority also reminds taxpayers who chose to direct part of their income tax to Children and Adolescents Funds or Elderly Funds through the tax return that the corresponding payment slip, known as the Darf, must be paid by the end of today. If the Darf is paid after the deadline, the contribution cannot be deducted.
To mark the end of the filing period, Federal Revenue Secretary Robinson Barreirinhas will take part in a press interview at 4 p.m. in São Paulo alongside Serpro president Wilton Mota. The event will provide an overview of the filing period and will be streamed online.
