Dylan Harper Must Sustain Historic Rookie Form in Game 7

The San Antonio Spurs are one win away from reaching the NBA Finals, heading into a decisive Game 7 against defending champion Oklahoma City after taking a 3-2 series lead. San Antonio’s young core, led by Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle, has powered the playoff run, but rookie guard Dylan Harper has emerged as a critical factor in the Western Conference Finals.
Harper, the No. 2 overall pick, has already impressed in his first NBA season. During the regular season, he averaged 11.8 points on 51% shooting, along with 3.9 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game while sharing the backcourt with Castle and De’Aaron Fox. His postseason performance has raised his profile even further.
In Game 1 of the series, with Fox sidelined, Harper delivered one of the best outings of his young career, finishing with 24 points, 11 rebounds, seven steals and six assists in a double-overtime victory. That win proved pivotal in San Antonio’s path through the series. While his production dipped in the middle games, Harper responded in Game 6 with 18 points on 67% shooting as the Spurs produced a dominant win to force the deciding matchup.
Harper has now been a major contributor in two of San Antonio’s three victories in the series, showing that he can impact high-pressure games against elite competition. Oklahoma City has had difficulty containing his physical drives to the basket, and its defenders have struggled to keep him from generating offense in the paint.
Even with some quieter performances during the series, Harper’s overall postseason output has been exceptional for a rookie. First-year players rarely play such a large role in the playoffs, let alone become difference-makers in multiple wins during a conference finals run. His play has reinforced expectations that he could become a franchise cornerstone, while also giving the Spurs a more balanced and dangerous attack.
San Antonio now faces its biggest test yet: a road Game 7 in Oklahoma City on Sunday at 7 p.m. CT. The winner will advance to the NBA Finals to face the New York Knicks, with Game 1 scheduled for Wednesday, June 3. For the Spurs, Harper’s ability to deliver another standout performance could determine whether their surprising run continues or ends one step short of the championship round.
