French Open: Frances Tiafoe Rallies Past Jaime Faria After Early Deficit

Frances Tiafoe kept his French Open run alive with a hard-fought five-set comeback win over Portugal’s Jaime Faria on Saturday, rallying from two sets down to advance 4-6, 6(2)-7(7), 7(7)-6(4), 6-1, 6-2. The No. 19 seed from the United States was under heavy pressure early as Faria controlled the opening two sets and appeared poised to pull off another surprise in a tournament already marked by major upsets.

Tiafoe steadied himself in the third set, eventually winning a tense tiebreak to shift the momentum. He then dominated the fourth set as Faria’s errors mounted, including two costly double faults that helped the American level the match. By the fifth set, the tension between the players was clear. The contest stretched past midnight local time, and Faria took a long break before exchanging words with Tiafoe and later the chair umpire as officials tried to settle both players.

At one point, Tiafoe was heard telling Faria at the net, “Why don’t you quit trying to act like you’re tough? You’re not hard bro, just play.” Despite the heated exchange and signs of fatigue, Tiafoe finished stronger, winning the final four games to seal the comeback.

Afterward, Tiafoe said he felt physically “great” and acknowledged that the match had looked difficult for him earlier. He said his plan was to keep pressuring Faria’s serve and extend the match long enough to wear him down, a tactic that ultimately worked. “By all means, you gotta break this game,” he said of his approach. “Hopefully, I can take his legs as the match went long, and that’s what I did.”

Tiafoe’s victory comes during a chaotic men’s draw at Roland-Garros. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner was upset by an unranked opponent on Thursday, Novak Djokovic fell in another shocking early defeat on Friday, and Ben Shelton became the latest American man to exit the tournament with a loss on Thursday. On the women’s side, reigning champion Coco Gauff also suffered an upset on Saturday, underscoring the tournament’s wave of early exits among top players.

With the win, Tiafoe advances to face Matteo Arnaldi in the fourth round, where he will try to reach the French Open quarterfinals for a second straight year. The 28-year-old American has yet to win a Grand Slam title, though he has reached the U.S. Open semifinals twice, in 2022 and 2024.
