Lakers Trade Rumors Heat Up as Thunder Reduce Luguentz Dort’s Role in Conference Finals

The Los Angeles Lakers are seeking 3-and-D role players to build around Luka Doncic, and Oklahoma City Thunder wing Luguentz Dort has emerged as a possible trade target. While Dort is not expected to become a free agent, his reduced minutes in the Thunder’s conference finals matchup against the San Antonio Spurs have fueled speculation that he could become available in a trade if Oklahoma City looks to trim salary under the league’s second apron.
Dort has been a starter throughout the season, but his role has diminished in the postseason. He averaged 26.8 minutes per game during the regular season, his lowest mark since his rookie year, and played even less in the first two rounds of the playoffs. In the current series against San Antonio, his playing time has dropped further, including just 18 minutes in a key game that Oklahoma City won 3-2 to take the lead in the series. He scored seven points on 3-of-7 shooting and has struggled from three-point range, making only three of 13 attempts in the series.
The Thunder are facing major financial decisions as their roster gets more expensive, with Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams both expected to command salaries above $40 million per year. Oklahoma City is projected to be well over the second apron, which could force general manager Sam Presti to make difficult choices. Other key rotation players such as Alex Caruso and Isaiah Hartenstein have played important roles in the postseason, but Dort has looked like a more expendable piece relative to the rest of the roster.
Los Angeles would likely need to trade for Dort, as Oklahoma City has an $18.2 million team option and is unlikely to let a proven perimeter defender leave without compensation. For the Lakers, though, he could be an ideal fit next to Doncic. Dort brings physical defense, toughness, and enough shooting to function in a complementary role. He shot 41.2 percent from three-point range last season, making him a credible floor-spacer for a team that needs more reliable two-way wings.
The Lakers’ need for roster upgrades became clear in their playoff loss to the Thunder in the second round, when Oklahoma City swept Los Angeles in a lopsided series. Doncic was dealing with injury issues, but the defeat underscored the gap between the teams and the need for better supporting talent. The Lakers are reportedly hoping to build a roster more similar to the one Dallas surrounded Doncic with during its 2024 NBA Finals run.
If Dort’s role continues to shrink, the possibility of a trade becomes more realistic. For the Lakers, adding a high-energy defender who can hit threes and guard opposing wings could be a major step toward improving around Doncic. For Oklahoma City, financial pressures may eventually determine whether Dort remains part of the core.
