Southend Pier Open-Air Disco Returns for a Stunning Second Year

Southend Pier’s “On the Decks” event has returned, offering DJs, live music, dancing and cocktails at the end of the world’s longest pleasure pier. Running from noon to 7pm today and again on Bank Holiday Monday from 1pm to 7pm, the seaside gathering gives visitors uninterrupted views across the Thames Estuary while they relax with drinks from the bar, which is open throughout the afternoon.
The event, first introduced last year, has been designed to make use of an otherwise unused space on the pier and to revive the lively atmosphere once associated with the landmark. Southend Council worked with cultural figures from across the town to shape the experience, turning the area into an open-air disco that combines music, leisure and scenic views.
Visitors described the event as a perfect finale to a trip along the pier. Families and friends made use of deck chairs, beach huts and the warm weather, with many staying to enjoy the music and the laid-back setting. David Joseph, who travelled from Gidea Park with his family, said the atmosphere was fantastic and praised the live music, bar and train ride along the pier. Sally, who attended with Carmel from Chelmsford, called the afternoon “fabulous” and said they enjoyed sitting in the deckchairs with a drink while listening to soul music and dancing.
Southend Labour councillor for business, culture and tourism Matt Dent said the return of On the Decks was one of the highlights of last summer on the pier and said he was delighted to bring it back for a second year. He added that the bank holiday weekend, with its sunshine and warm weather, offered residents a chance to head to the pier for a drink, a dance and views of the estuary.
The event aims to combine live entertainment with the pier’s distinctive coastal setting, giving visitors a relaxed social space at the end of the iconic structure. With music, refreshments and panoramic views, On the Decks is being positioned as a summer attraction that celebrates Southend Pier’s heritage while creating a modern social experience for visitors of all ages.
