UIDAI to Phase Out mAadhaar App, New Aadhaar App to Be Launched

UIDAI is set to make a major change to Aadhaar’s digital experience by phasing out the current mAadhaar app and replacing it with a new app called “Aadhaar.” The authority says the new platform will be more secure, more modern, and better suited to today’s digital identity needs. While mAadhaar has remained functional, UIDAI says it had certain limitations, especially when users showed it at hotels, hospitals, or government offices, where the app could sometimes reveal more Aadhaar information than necessary. That created privacy and security concerns.
The new Aadhaar app is designed to solve that problem by allowing users to share only the specific information they want to disclose. Instead of exposing the full Aadhaar profile, the app will support selective data sharing, reducing the risk of unnecessary personal information being displayed or copied. UIDAI says this will make Aadhaar use safer in everyday verification settings.
According to UIDAI, downloading and setting up the new app will be straightforward. Users will be able to find it by searching for “Aadhaar” on either the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. After installation, they will need to choose one of 13 languages. Next, they must complete OTP verification using the mobile number linked to their Aadhaar. For additional protection, the app may also request a face scan. Once that is done, users can set a security PIN and link their 12-digit Aadhaar number to create their profile.
The new app introduces several upgraded features. One of the most notable is face-based login, which means users may be able to access the app using facial recognition instead of depending only on passwords or OTPs. Another major feature is QR code-based access, which allows verified information to be shared by scanning a code while keeping private or sensitive data hidden. This should make identity verification faster and safer.
Security has been further strengthened through biometric lock options. UIDAI says the app can be protected with fingerprint, face, and iris locks, giving users multiple layers of biometric security for their profiles. These features are meant to ensure that only the rightful owner can access and use the digital identity details stored in the app.
UIDAI says the new Aadhaar app represents a more advanced digital identity system than mAadhaar and is intended to serve as a safer identity tool in the future. The broader aim is to give citizens more control over their personal data while making Aadhaar verification more convenient and secure across everyday services.
