Helena Zengel Talks About Meeting the Real Woman Behind Her Role in Westend Girl

German actor Helena Zengel leads the new thriller series “Westend Girl,” which premieres at Seriencamp in Cologne and is being distributed worldwide by Beta Film. Set in Düsseldorf and inspired by a true story, the series follows Ronja, a privileged teenager whose life unravels after her parents are arrested for allegedly running the region’s largest cocaine ring. The story begins with Ronja on the brink of starting medical school, but her world shifts dramatically when the image of her perfect family collapses.
Zengel described Ronja as naive at first, someone who wants to believe in the stability and love of her family even as she senses something is wrong. She said Ronja sees her father as the dominant force in the household and her mother as soft and restrained, with tension already present beneath the surface. After the arrests, Ronja is forced to revisit her childhood and reexamine memories she once accepted at face value, creating a crisis around identity, truth, and family loyalty.
The series uses flashbacks to show young Ronja and reveal how her understanding of her parents changes over time. Zengel said the character undergoes a major transformation, moving from a childlike teenager into an adult who must take control of difficult situations. By the end of the story, Ronja becomes the one holding everything together, reversing the family roles she once knew.
Zengel said one of the most meaningful parts of the project was meeting the woman whose life inspired Ronja. She described the experience as intense, emotional, and special, noting that the real woman was present during much of filming. Zengel said she values meeting the people behind such stories, and that the woman later cried after seeing clips from the production. She added that the series is inspired by real events, though not everything shown happened exactly as portrayed on screen.
The actress said she chose “Westend Girl” because it gave her the chance to work in German again after years of international projects. She also wanted to play a coming-of-age role that would let audiences see her as a young adult rather than a child star. Zengel became widely known after “System Crasher” and later appeared in English-language films including “News of the World” and “The Legend of Ochi.” She said her career will likely continue to alternate between German and international productions.
“Westend Girl” is co-created by Richard Kropf and Pola Beck, with Beck and Stefan Schaller directing. The cast also includes Frederic Balonier, Lucas Gregorowicz, Luise Heyer, Alexander Scheer, Samirah Breuer, and Hanna Heckt. The series is produced by Flare Film in co-production with WDR and ARTE, with Beta Film handling worldwide distribution.
