Vitality Blast 2026: Hampshire vs Sussex South Group Match Report, June 2, 2026

Liam Dawson delivered a match-winning all-round performance as Hampshire Hawks defeated Sussex Sharks by 29 runs in the Vitality Blast men’s competition, extending their winning streak to four games and moving four points clear at the top of the South Group.

Hampshire posted 173 for six after being put in to bat, with Dawson again anchoring the innings through the middle overs. He scored 52, backing up his 76 against Surrey in the previous match and registering his second consecutive half-century. Tristan Stubbs provided crucial support with a 66-run stand that helped Hampshire recover from a difficult start, while James Fuller and Hilton Cartwright added valuable late runs to lift the total in the closing overs.

Sussex made an immediate impact with the ball. Tymal Mills struck early by removing James Vince in the second over and kept things tight in the powerplay, conceding only 13 runs in his two overs. James Coles also bowled economically, while Tom Price and Danny Briggs chipped in with key wickets as Hampshire were reduced to 42 for four after seven overs. However, Dawson’s composure and shot-making steadied the innings, and Hampshire finished strongly with 37 runs from the final three overs.

Sussex also started their chase positively, reaching 67 in the powerplay as Daniel Hughes and Harrison Ward attacked the Hampshire attack. Hughes struck Fuller for 17 in one over, and Ward followed by taking Scott Currie for another big over. But Hampshire turned the match when Ward was dismissed off the final ball of the powerplay, triggering a collapse.

Fuller, after being expensive early, responded superbly with two wickets in quick succession, while Dawson and Currie applied pressure through the middle overs. Hughes and Coles fell in successive deliveries, with Dawson taking a sharp caught-and-bowled to dismiss Coles. Jack Leaning was then stumped off Dawson, and John Simpson was removed by Currie as Sussex lost momentum and the required rate climbed.

The lower order could not recover, and Hampshire closed out the contest in style. Chris Wood had Tom Price caught, Mills was bowled to give Dawson his third wicket, and youngster Manny Lumsden sealed the victory by bowling Henry Crocombe. Dawson finished with three for 20, while Fuller and Wood claimed two wickets apiece, and Lumsden also took two.

For Sussex, Harrison Ward top-scored with 40, but the chase faded after a bright start. The defeat leaves them bottom of the South Group with just one win, while Hampshire continue to build momentum with another convincing all-round display.
