Anthony Russo Says No New Avengers Films Are Planned for Now

Joe and Anthony Russo appeared at Deadline’s Reality TV Summit UK during SXSW London with AGBO partner Donald Mustard, offering new updates on Marvel Studios’ next two Avengers films, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The filmmakers confirmed that Doomsday is currently in post-production while Secret Wars is in pre-production, with release dates planned for December 2026 and December 2027 respectively.
Anthony Russo said the brothers do not currently have any other Avengers films lined up, but he did not close the door on future Marvel projects. He described the current pair of films as a complete narrative arc, explaining that Doomsday and Secret Wars are designed to work together as two connected stories. He emphasized that the focus now is on completing this story, while leaving open the possibility of collaborating with Marvel again in the future.
Joe Russo added a lighter note, joking that fans would need to wait until 2028 to see how the team looks in photos before learning more. He also gave a brief production update, saying the team is still working on Doomsday and expects to continue until around November, when the film may temporarily be handed off to others to finish for a short period. He said the brothers are also in the middle of pre-production on Secret Wars, noting that they often like to handle multiple projects at the same time.
The Russo brothers reaffirmed their long-running relationship with Marvel Studios and Disney, saying the partnership has been highly productive and that they value the work they have done within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Anthony Russo said both sides appreciate what the other brings to the collaboration, pointing to the success of their previous Marvel films as a foundation for the new projects.
Mustard, who joined AGBO in 2023 after leading Fortnite and serving as Epic Games’ Chief Creative Officer, also spoke about the company’s push into interactive and immersive storytelling. He hinted that interactive elements are being explored for Avengers: Doomsday, saying the team is working together on ways to blend storytelling approaches. He described the partnership as one focused on creating new kinds of experiences that merge film and interactive media.
Joe Russo said AGBO is fully committed to expanding into interactive storytelling and believes the blending of linear and interactive entertainment will accelerate. He cited the success of Backrooms, the film based on Kane Parsons’ viral YouTube mythology, as an example of how internet-born ideas can evolve into major screen projects. According to Russo, that kind of audience-driven, collective storytelling offers a glimpse of where entertainment may be headed next.
