Sydney Sweeney Reacts to Euphoria’s OnlyFans Storyline

Sydney Sweeney is speaking out about Cassie’s controversial OnlyFans storyline in Euphoria Season 3, saying the character’s choices are driven by a deep need for love and validation. In a recent Vanity Fair interview published Tuesday, Sweeney said Cassie “has this need to be loved” and depends on other people to define her self-worth. She explained that Cassie is drawn to the idea of being seen by many people and having her world feel bigger, which is why the subscription-based platform storyline makes sense for the character.
In the upcoming season, Cassie becomes a model on OnlyFans after marrying Nate, played by Jacob Elordi. Sweeney said she viewed the plot through Cassie’s emotional perspective rather than her own personal beliefs. She stressed that she does not agree with all of Cassie’s decisions, but that as an actor, her responsibility is to bring the character to life truthfully. According to Sweeney, acting requires stepping into someone else’s world, even when that character makes extreme or uncomfortable choices.
Sweeney also said Euphoria creator Sam Levinson discussed the nude scenes and OnlyFans material with her before filming. She said he sent her the scripts and later called to talk through the scenes and ask how she felt about them. Her response, she said, was that she was “playing a character” and that it was her job to portray Cassie honestly and with vulnerability. Sweeney added that her goal was to help realize Levinson’s vision while fully committing to the role.
The actress, 28, also addressed questions about how much of herself appears in the characters she plays. She said most people have “no clue” who she really is and said she enjoys acting because it allows her to become different people. For Sweeney, the appeal of the craft is not in playing herself, but in fully inhabiting roles that are far removed from her own life.
Levinson has also commented on the storyline in recent interviews. He said he initially considered ways to shoot the material without nudity but quickly realized that Cassie’s role as an OnlyFans model made the topic too central to avoid. According to Levinson, Sweeney questioned whether he was serious about trying to “skirt around it,” and he said she made a fair point.
The storyline has already drawn attention for its provocative subject matter, and Sweeney’s comments suggest she sees it as an extension of Cassie’s emotional instability rather than a shocking plot twist for its own sake. Her remarks reinforce that the character’s behavior will likely remain a major part of the show’s third season and a key talking point among fans as Euphoria returns.
