Nicholas Godejohn’s Chilling Words Before Killing Dee Dee Blanchard

Gypsy Rose Blanchard is revisiting the night her mother, Claudine “Dee Dee” Blanchard, was killed in 2015 and describing what her former boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn allegedly said before the stabbing. In a June 9 episode of the “We Need to Talk” podcast, Gypsy, 34, said Dee Dee asked, “Who are you?” and Godejohn replied, “I am death.” She said her account matches court transcripts and comments Godejohn reportedly made to fellow inmates.
Blanchard described the moment as overwhelming and terrifying, saying she heard her mother calling her name and then screaming from another room. She said she wanted to help but felt physically unable to move, explaining that she was focused on breathing and blocking out what was happening. She recalled hiding in the bathroom, curling into a fetal position, and hearing one sharp scream before the house went silent. At that point, she said she realized the attack was over.
Gypsy met Godejohn online and developed a close relationship with him before it became romantic. The two later became involved in the 2015 killing, which prosecutors said followed years of abuse and deception connected to Dee Dee’s alleged behavior. Dee Dee was 48 when she was stabbed to death. She had long been suspected of suffering from factitious disorder imposed on another, formerly known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a condition in which a caregiver exaggerates or fabricates illness in someone under their care for attention or sympathy.
After the murder, Gypsy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in 2016 and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. She was released in December 2023. Godejohn was convicted of first-degree murder in 2018 and is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
In the podcast, Gypsy also reflected on the aftermath of the killing and said she was in a state of shock. She recalled waiting in the bathroom while Godejohn was in the house and described herself as being completely naked at the time.
She further discussed disturbing allegations involving Godejohn’s intentions that night. Gypsy said he had described a fantasy of assaulting Dee Dee before killing her, and she claimed she felt that crossed a line. She said she agreed to let him sexually assault her instead, but also admitted she did not fully understand what she was agreeing to. Gypsy said she later had to testify in court and state that she had not been raped because of that agreement.
A note from the podcast’s producers said Godejohn has disputed Gypsy’s allegations about the encounter. Her remarks add another emotional layer to one of the most widely followed criminal cases in recent years, as she continues speaking publicly about the abuse, fear, and trauma surrounding her mother’s death and her own role in the crime.
