Sydney Sweeney Addresses Zendaya Feud Rumors, Calls Them “Narratives”

Sydney Sweeney has addressed the long-running speculation about tension between her and Zendaya, saying fans and the media have exaggerated ordinary production circumstances into a feud. In a recent interview, Sweeney explained that the cast of HBO’s Euphoria grew up together on the series and that online narratives have created drama where none exists. She said scheduling misunderstandings were also misread by the public, noting that she was contractually committed to HBO during filming and that her availability did not hold up production.
Rumors about a rift between the two actresses intensified around Season 3 of Euphoria, fueled by theories about Sweeney’s alleged political views and unverified claims involving Zendaya’s fiancé, Tom Holland. Observers also pointed to the actresses appearing separately in behind-the-scenes photos and promotional materials, as well as Sweeney’s absence from certain cast images. However, reports later clarified that at least some of her absences were due to filming commitments rather than personal conflict.
Other cast members have also pushed back on the idea of a feud. Jessica Blair Herman said the working environment was professional and that the two stars often had different filming schedules and limited shared scenes, which helped explain the lack of public interaction. Sweeney’s recent comments did not directly mention Zendaya by name, but she made clear that social media speculation has distorted the reality of their working relationship.
The actress also spoke about her character, Cassie Howard, and defended her performance against criticism tied to the storyline in Season 3. Sweeney emphasized that playing a character does not mean endorsing every action that character takes. She said creator Sam Levinson discussed Cassie’s arc with her in advance and gave her room to engage with the role fully. According to Sweeney, Cassie’s choices come from deep emotional insecurity and a desire for validation, and her job as an actor is to portray that honestly rather than judge it.
Sweeney said she wanted to fully embody Cassie’s vulnerability and emotional extremes, including the controversial adult-industry storyline, because avoiding those elements would weaken the integrity of the character. Levinson reportedly considered making the arc less explicit, but Sweeney argued that such a change would undermine the story. He later praised her commitment and described her as bold in her creative choices.
Beyond acting, Sweeney is expanding her role in Hollywood through production. She recently launched her company, Honey Trap, with longtime collaborator Kaylee McGregor. The company is focused on bold, emotionally complex storytelling across film and television. Among its early projects are a remake of Barbarella with Sony and a feature adaptation of Lindsey Anderson Beer’s novel Hollow. Sweeney is expected to star in and produce Hollow, while Beer will direct and adapt the screenplay. The venture marks a major step in Sweeney’s growing influence as both a performer and producer.
