Real Madrid Pursue Ibrahima Konaté and Denzel Dumfries Transfer Deals

Real Madrid are moving ahead with plans to strengthen their defence this summer, with Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries emerging as key targets as the club awaits the outcome of its presidential election. The Spanish giants are operating under the expectation that Florentino Perez will remain in charge after the vote on June 7, and sources briefed on the situation say that could help clear the way for several transfer moves.

Liverpool defender Konate is expected to leave on a free transfer when his contract expires on June 30. Madrid have revived their interest in the France international as they look for a centre-back, with David Alaba also due to depart and concerns lingering over Eder Militao’s fitness. Konate, 27, had been in talks with Liverpool over an extension since October 2024, and although he said in April that he was “close” to an agreement, the two sides were unable to reach a deal.

At right-back, Madrid have made Inter Milan’s Dumfries their top target. The Netherlands international has a €20million release clause, and the club has already held talks with the 30-year-old. Personal terms are not expected to be an obstacle, and one source said Madrid are planning to finalise the move after the presidential election, provided Perez wins as expected.

The transfer planning is also tied to the expected arrival of Jose Mourinho, who is set to return to Madrid as head coach on a three-year deal. Mourinho has already been involved in discussions over squad planning and has pushed for reinforcements in defence, including a backup right-back, a left-back, a strong centre-back and a creative midfielder. Madrid’s move for Mourinho was delayed by Perez’s decision to call the election, with the coaching change potentially costing the club about €15million.

Madrid’s right-back situation could become urgent. Dani Carvajal, 34, is set to leave when his contract ends at the end of June, while Trent Alexander-Arnold would otherwise be the only senior specialist in the role. The club is therefore seeking a second-choice option for around €30million. Other names considered include Tottenham’s Pedro Porro and Sporting CP’s Ivan Fresneda, although both appear difficult to sign within Madrid’s preferred budget.

Perez, 79, is facing a presidential challenge for the first time since 2004, with renewable energy entrepreneur Enrique Riquelme standing against him. Around 100,000 club members are eligible to vote, and the result is expected to shape Madrid’s summer rebuild.
