Man Utd: INEOS make offer for Tottenham star in approved £56m deal

Manchester United have reportedly made a strong move for Cristian Romero, offering the Tottenham defender an attractive contract and a promise to make him a central figure in their back line. According to the reports, United want Romero to become a leader in defence as part of their summer rebuild.
The Argentina international, who is now 28, has again been linked with an exit from Tottenham after another season of uncertainty around his future. While Romero has been repeatedly mentioned as a possible departure in previous transfer windows, there are signs that this summer could be different.
Reports from TEAMtalk suggested that Tottenham’s view of the defender has cooled in recent weeks. That change in mood came after Romero returned to Argentina before Tottenham’s final Premier League match of the season, reportedly planning to watch his boyhood club Belgrano face River Plate. The timing caused frustration inside the club because Spurs were still fighting to secure their top-flight status, and his absence was seen as a poor look for a captain, even though he was injured and unavailable to play.
Romero later returned to England after internal pressure, where he showed support for his teammates, and Tottenham eventually avoided relegation. Even so, the episode appears to have contributed to a growing willingness among Spurs officials to consider offers for the centre-back if their valuation is met.
Those same reports say intermediaries have already started sounding out potential buyers and testing interest across Europe, with a high-profile transfer now looking increasingly possible. A move to Atletico Madrid had previously been discussed as a realistic option, but a new report from Spain suggests Romero could remain in the Premier League instead by joining Manchester United.
The Spanish report claims United have offered Romero a lucrative deal and have promised him a cornerstone role in their defence. It also states that Tottenham are prepared to listen to bids, with a fee of around €65 million, or roughly £56 million, likely to be enough to strike an agreement. United are said to be confident of completing the transfer quickly so they can begin preseason planning with a settled squad.
Tottenham, meanwhile, are already working on defensive reinforcements. The club has reportedly completed the free-agent signing of Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth and is also expected to return with an improved offer for Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke. Their first bid, believed to be around £40 million, was rejected, but Spurs are planning to increase their offer as they continue to reshape their back line.
Romero’s future therefore appears increasingly uncertain, with Manchester United now emerging as a serious contender if Tottenham decide to cash in.
