Germany’s 7-1 Win Over Brazil: 12 Years On, Their Other 7-Goal World Cup Rout—and Curaçao’s 7-1 Thrashing, as Havertz Scores Multiple Goals

Germany opened its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a dominant 7-1 victory over Curaçao in Group E at Houston’s stadium on June 15 local time, signaling its title ambitions with a ruthless attacking display. Ranked 10th in the FIFA rankings, Germany overpowered 82nd-ranked Curaçao from the opening minutes and produced one of the tournament’s biggest blowouts.

Felix Nmecha gave Germany an early lead in the sixth minute, but Curaçao briefly responded through Juninho Bacuna’s equalizer in the 21st minute, a historic moment that marked the team’s first-ever World Cup goal. That celebration was short-lived, as Germany quickly regained control and never allowed the underdog to settle into the match.

Nico Schlotterbeck restored Germany’s advantage in the 38th minute, before Kai Havertz converted a penalty late in the first half to make it 3-1. Germany then accelerated after the break. Jamal Musiala added a fourth in the 68th minute, followed by a goal from Daniel Brown in the 78th minute to extend the lead to 5-1. Germany continued pressing and reached six goals before Havertz struck again in the 88th minute to complete his brace and seal the final 7-1 scoreline.

Germany’s superiority was evident not only on the scoreboard but also in the overall numbers. It controlled 54% of possession and dominated the shot count 26-8, repeatedly breaking through Curaçao’s defense with pace, movement, and precision in the final third. Several players contributed directly to the scoring surge, including Havertz with two goals, Undav with a goal and two assists, Brown with a goal and an assist, and Joshua Kimmich with two assists.

The result also carried historical significance. According to Opta statistics referenced in the report, only a handful of World Cup matches in the 21st century have featured more than seven goals, and Germany has now been involved in three of them. The victory recalled its previous big-margin World Cup wins, including an 8-0 defeat of Saudi Arabia in 2002 and the famous 7-1 semifinal win over host Brazil in 2014.

For Curaçao, the night was bittersweet. The team made its World Cup debut and celebrated its first goal on the global stage, but it also experienced the steep challenge of competing against one of the tournament favorites. Still, Bacuna’s strike ensured a place in the nation’s football history.

Germany’s emphatic opening win gives it an ideal start in Group E and underlines the depth and firepower that make it one of the teams to watch in the 2026 World Cup.
