Woman Mauled by Shark at Sydney’s Iconic Coogee Beach

A young surfer has shared how quick thinking and composure helped him survive a shark attack off Australia’s coast earlier this month. Alejo Santiñaque, a 20-year-old Uruguayan national, was waiting for a wave at Red Cliff when he felt a sudden impact on his foot and realized a shark had bitten him and pulled him underwater.

In a Facebook post recounting the frightening incident, Santiñaque said the shark became tangled in his surfboard leash as it dragged him beneath the surface. Instead of freezing or panicking, he reacted instinctively and fought back. He said he kicked the shark as hard as he could in an effort to force it to let go, and the move worked, causing the animal to release its grip.

Santiñaque said the situation was chaotic and terrifying, but his focus on staying calm made a major difference. He described clear thinking as essential from the moment he was bitten until he managed to make it back to the beach. According to his account, avoiding panic allowed him to concentrate on what he needed to do to survive.

The attack left him with serious injuries, including a ruptured tendon and a torn muscle. He later required surgery as a result of the wounds sustained during the encounter. Even so, he said he believes his immediate response and refusal to panic helped save his life.

The incident adds to growing concern about shark encounters along Australia’s coastline, where surfers and swimmers regularly face the risk of marine attacks. Santiñaque’s experience has drawn attention because of the way he responded under pressure, with his story highlighting how survival in such situations may depend not only on luck but also on instinct, preparation and calm decision-making.

His account also underscores the dangerous force of shark attacks, particularly when a victim is taken unexpectedly and pulled underwater. Santiñaque said the moment he felt the bite, he knew he had to act quickly. By fighting back and focusing on escaping rather than succumbing to fear, he was able to break free and reach shore.

The surfer’s recovery is expected to take time after surgery, but his description of the attack has resonated with readers for its stark detail and survival message. His story stands as a reminder of the risks faced by ocean users and the importance of staying calm in life-threatening emergencies.
