Snowfall Spinoff The Drop Is Finally on the Way
FX is expanding the world of Snowfall with a new spinoff titled The Drop: A Snowfall Saga, set to premiere later this year on FX, Hulu, and Disney+ internationally. The series arrives after Snowfall ended in 2023 following six seasons, giving longtime fans a new chapter in the story and returning the franchise to one of its most defining settings: Los Angeles and the evolution of West Coast rap culture.
The Drop centers on fan-favorite characters Wanda, played by Gail Bean, and Leon, played by Isaiah John. The two characters are shown navigating the push to bring West Coast rap into the mainstream while dealing with mounting challenges from gang conflict, music industry power struggles, and record label politics. The spinoff shifts the timeline from the crack epidemic era explored in Snowfall to 1990s Los Angeles, a period marked by major cultural change and the increasing commercialization of hip-hop.
The new setting gives the series room to explore how the genre and the city changed during a decade when rap became more visible, more profitable, and more contested. The story is expected to examine the tension between artistic authenticity and mainstream success, while also reflecting the social and business pressures that shaped the era. With writer Michael Spellman and the original Snowfall producers involved, the project is positioned to continue the franchise’s focus on ambitious storytelling tied to a specific historical moment.
The cast combines returning Snowfall characters with new additions. Alongside Bean and John, the ensemble includes Asante Black, Peyton Alex Smith, Simmie “Buddy” Sims, Mykelti Williamson, Nicki Micheaux, Brandon Mychal Smith, Isidora Goreshter, Eric Balfour, Richard Portnow, Zaire Adams, Demetrius Gross, and Quincy Chad. The mix of familiar and new faces suggests the series will expand the Snowfall universe while introducing fresh storylines and perspectives from the 1990s music scene.
For fans of the original show, the spinoff offers a chance to revisit characters who helped define the emotional and cultural core of Snowfall. By moving into the next decade, the series can explore the aftermath of the earlier era and show how the ambitions of its characters intersect with the rise of a more commercialized hip-hop industry.
With its release planned for later this year, The Drop: A Snowfall Saga is shaping up as one of FX’s notable upcoming drama entries. The series aims to blend crime, music, and period storytelling, while continuing the legacy of a franchise that connected deeply with audiences interested in Los Angeles history, street-level drama, and the roots of West Coast rap.
