Paul Wesley Responds to Questions About a Possible Star Trek Captain Kirk Spinoff With 4 Funny Words

Paul Wesley has said there is still no update on the proposed “Star Trek: Year One” spinoff, which would center on James T. Kirk and the early years of the Enterprise under his command. Speaking at FanX Comic Convention in Indianapolis, Wesley joked that Paramount+ “lost my phone number,” underscoring that he has not received any call to move the project forward. The comments suggest the series remains only an idea, with no active development currently underway.

The spinoff has been described as a soft reboot of the original Star Trek concept, focusing on the bridge crew during Kirk’s early tenure. Wesley has previously expressed enthusiasm for returning if the opportunity arises, and he repeated that position in his latest remarks, saying he and the creative team would be ready to do it if Paramount+ reaches out. For now, however, he said that the call has not come.

The update arrives as Star Trek: Strange New Worlds prepares to return to television this summer, with Season 4 scheduled to premiere on Thursday, July 23, 2026. The series has already completed filming its final season, which has increased interest in what comes next for the franchise once the current run ends. Fans have been especially curious about whether Kirk’s version of the story might continue in a separate series.

Jonathan Frakes previously indicated that there are no Star Trek projects in active development at the moment, reinforcing the sense that any new television expansion is on hold. That appears to leave Paramount+ in a waiting period as it manages the franchise’s future direction. The company is also navigating its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, which may affect timing and decisions around major content strategy, including Star Trek.

At the same time, Paramount+ still has several Star Trek releases ahead before its TV slate runs thin. Strange New Worlds Season 4 is due this year, while 2027 is expected to bring the final season of the series and the second season of Starfleet Academy, despite that show’s cancellation. Beyond that, the outlook remains uncertain.

There have been broader reports that Star Trek could return to theaters, but television appears to be in a holding pattern. With Alex Kurtzman’s contract eventually nearing its end, Paramount+ may be waiting to decide who will lead the next phase of the franchise on streaming. Until that happens, the future of “Year One” and other potential series remains unresolved.

For now, Wesley’s remarks make clear that he is still interested in playing Kirk again if the opportunity presents itself. But until Paramount+ makes a move, the proposed spinoff remains one of several Star Trek ideas sitting on the sidelines.
