Atlético Nacional and Junior to Decide Colombia’s First League Champion: Here’s the Prize for the Winner

Atlético Nacional and Junior de Barranquilla will decide the first champion of Colombian football’s 2026 season at Atanasio Girardot in Medellín, in a final that carries both sporting glory and major financial consequences. Junior enters the second leg with a commanding 3-0 lead after the first match in Barranquilla, where Bryan Castrillón opened the scoring and Luis Fernando Muriel added two more goals to leave the team from the Caribbean coast close to its 12th league title.

The title match is scheduled for Monday at 5:00 p.m. local time. National must win by at least three goals to force a penalty shootout, or by a larger margin to secure the championship outright. The Medellín club has reason to believe in a comeback, given its strong home form and several high-scoring performances during the season. Junior, however, has been one of the most consistent teams in the tournament and has conceded few heavy defeats, making it well positioned to protect its advantage.

Beyond the trophy, the champion will receive important economic and sporting rewards. While the Colombian league is sponsored by BetPlay, the tournament itself does not award a direct cash prize to the winner. Instead, financial benefits come mainly from CONMEBOL, which has promoted incentive programs for national leagues across South America since 2022. Under that system, Junior, as the reigning champion, received US$500,000, or about 1.9 billion Colombian pesos, through the Colombian Football Federation. A similar amount is expected for the 2026 first-half champion.

The bigger reward, however, is automatic qualification to the group stage of the 2027 Copa Libertadores. That berth guarantees at least US$3 million in participation income alone, a figure CONMEBOL currently grants to clubs that reach that phase of the continental competition. Combined with the champion’s incentive, the total financial benefit for the Liga BetPlay I-2026 winner could exceed US$3.5 million before accounting for any further earnings in the Libertadores.

For Colombian clubs, reaching the Libertadores is one of the most valuable outcomes of winning the domestic title. In addition to guaranteed appearance money, teams can earn more through victories and progression to later rounds. For that reason, the final in Medellín is about more than lifting a trophy: it is also about securing a major boost for the club’s finances and a place among South America’s elite in 2027.
