Argentina Defender Leonardo Balerdi Ruled Out of FIFA World Cup 2026

Argentina defender Leonardo Balerdi will miss the World Cup after suffering a muscle injury in the soleus of his right leg, the national team said on Saturday, June 6, 2026. The 27-year-old centre back was included in Argentina’s 26-man squad last week after a strong season with Olympique de Marseille, where he made 36 appearances in all competitions.
Argentina said Balerdi will not be able to join the squad for the tournament. In its statement, the team expressed support for the player and wished him a speedy recovery. Balerdi has earned 11 caps for Argentina and had been viewed as a reliable defensive option heading into the competition.
The injury is a setback for the defending champions as they prepare to begin their World Cup campaign. Argentina has not yet announced a replacement for Balerdi in the squad. The team is scheduled to face Honduras in a friendly later on Saturday before turning its focus to the tournament.
Argentina opens Group J play against Algeria on June 16, 2026, followed by matches against Austria and Jordan. Balerdi’s absence leaves the squad with one fewer experienced defender as the team looks to defend its title.
