Barnes & Noble Names This $20 Strategy Game Its June Game of the Month
Barnes & Noble has chosen High Tide as its June 2026 Game of the Month, highlighting the small-format strategy title as a summer pick for players who want a quick but meaningful tabletop challenge. Designed by Marceline Leiman and published by Underdog Games, the two-player abstract game takes inspiration from the movement of the ocean and centers on a shifting board made of stacked wooden hexagons.
In High Tide, players try to keep their own pieces visible while covering up their opponent’s tiles as the board changes throughout the match. Each turn, a player moves one of their own tiles or a neutral tile onto an adjacent tile or stack. As the stacks grow taller, the layout becomes more unpredictable, forcing both players to adjust their plans and think several moves ahead. The goal is simple: end the round with more visible tiles than your opponent.
Barnes & Noble praised the game for being easy to learn while still offering enough depth to keep strategy fans engaged. The retailer also pointed to its compact size as a major advantage, especially for travelers and casual players looking for something portable. The game is positioned as a good fit for coffee shops, beach trips, vacations and other situations where a full-length board game might be too much.
Despite its straightforward rules, High Tide creates a strong strategic experience because every move reshapes the board. That constant change gives players new options and new problems to solve on each turn, making each round feel different. Matches are short, typically lasting about 5 to 15 minutes, which allows for quick rematches and extended play sessions without a major time commitment.
The game’s presentation is another part of its appeal. High Tide features natural wooden tiles, colorful glass stones and a soft travel bag, giving it a polished look and making it easy to carry. Its price point of $19.99 also makes it one of the more affordable titles Barnes & Noble has featured in the program.
The winning condition is also built for repeat play. When no more moves are available, the player with the most visible tiles wins the round. The first player to win three rounds takes the match, adding a competitive layer that encourages multiple plays in a single sitting.
Barnes & Noble’s selection reflects the growing interest in compact strategy games that combine accessibility, portability and replay value. For couples, casual players or anyone looking for a travel-friendly game with a clever twist, High Tide is being presented as a standout choice for summer game nights.
