Celebrity Hairstylist Travis Ogletree Shares His Golden Rules for Shiny, Sun-Kissed Hair All Summer Long

Celebrity hairstylist Travis Ogletree says summer hair care starts with a clean scalp, proper cleansing, and steady moisture. Known for his effortless California-inspired color, Ogletree tells ET that warm-weather factors such as heat, humidity, chlorine, ocean water, and sun exposure can quickly leave hair dry, frizzy, greasy, or dull. His first rule is to wash thoroughly: apply conditioner only to the ends before shampooing, then massage the scalp for a full count of 100 to make sure excess oil and product buildup are removed. When hair needs an extra reset, he recommends a double cleanse or a detox shampoo such as K18 Peptide Prep Detox Shampoo.

Once buildup is gone, Ogletree stresses that hydration becomes essential, especially for people spending more time swimming. He says brighter summer color often comes with extra dryness, so weekly masking can help keep hair soft and polished. One of his favorites is the Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, which he says works for all hair types, including fine hair. He suggests applying it at least once a week during a shower or on freshly washed hair, and notes that it can even be left in while styling the rest of the look with a clip.

For styling, Ogletree prefers products that add shine and control without making hair heavy. He recommends lightweight formulas such as RŌZ Milk Hair Serum, REHAB. Hair Milk Conditioning Heat Protection Spray, and a blend of Davines OI All In One Hair Milk with Davines OI Hair Oil and Liquid Spell Reinforcing Bodifying Fluid. These, he says, provide hydration along with a little hold, whether the goal is natural texture or a smooth blowout. For extra sleekness and shine, he likes the ghd Duet Blowdry Hair Dryer Brush because it recirculates air rather than blasting heat, which can reduce friction and help create a glossier finish. He then seals the style with Cécred Flexible Hold Hairspray.

Ogletree also reminds clients that summer beauty is not limited to hair. Sunscreen is part of the routine, especially for protecting the scalp and part line from sunburn. He suggests applying Peter Thomas Roth Anti-Aging Defense Sunscreen Stick along the part or wearing a hat for additional coverage. To extend a sun-kissed look beyond the hair, he also recommends Dolce Glow Self-Tanning Mist and Victoria Beckham Beauty Colour Wash Bronze Water Tint.

The overall message is simple: with the right cleansing, moisture, heat protection, and sun care, hair can stay soft, shiny, and healthy all summer long. Ogletree says many clients are surprised by how little maintenance their hair needs afterward, often requiring only a toner, gloss, or professional treatment to restore balance and keep blonde tones or damaged strands looking refreshed.
