Anna Kendrick is set to direct Netflix’s adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s bestselling novel The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, marking her next directing project after the success of her debut feature, Woman of the Hour. Sources say Kendrick is reuniting with Netflix for the high-profile film, which has been in development since the streamer acquired the rights in 2022. Liza Chasin is producing through 3Dot Productions, alongside Brad Mendelsohn of Circle Management + Productions and David Hinojosa.
The story centers on a young journalist who lands the long-awaited interview with Evelyn Hugo, an aging Hollywood icon known for her glamorous but scandal-filled life. As Evelyn opens up about her seven marriages, the conversation reveals secrets involving betrayal, heartbreak, and hidden truths that reshape the way her life and the lives of those around her are understood.
The screenplay was first drafted by Liz Tigelaar, with Francesca Sloane currently revising the script. Reid will serve as an executive producer on the film.
Taylor Jenkins Reid has become one of the most commercially successful authors of her generation, with more than 24 million copies sold worldwide in 43 languages. Her books have built a strong social media following, especially on TikTok, where her name has drawn hundreds of millions of views, including massive interest in The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Kendrick has remained active as an actor while expanding her work behind the camera. She recently reprised her role in Another Simple Favor and earned strong praise for Woman of the Hour, the serial killer dating game drama that Netflix acquired for an eight-figure sum after its 2023 Toronto Film Festival premiere. After that success, Netflix pushed to keep Kendrick in the director’s chair for her next project.
