CD Projekt Red Announces Third Rumored Witcher 3 Expansion

CD Projekt Red has confirmed a long-rumoured third expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, titled Songs of the Past. The new content will return players to the world of Geralt of Rivia and is scheduled for release next year. According to the announcement, the expansion is being co-developed with Fool’s Theory, the studio staffed by former CD Projekt Red developers that is also working on the remake of The Witcher 1 and providing support on The Witcher 4.
The project has drawn attention because it appears to be a full-scale expansion rather than a smaller add-on. CD Projekt Red described Songs of the Past as a “third expansion” for The Witcher 3, placing it alongside the game’s two major previous expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Both of those releases were substantial in size and scope, with Blood and Wine especially notable for adding an entirely new region and offering an adventure comparable to a standalone role-playing game.
At this stage, CD Projekt Red has revealed very little about the story or setting. What is clear is that Geralt will be the central character, and there is no mention of Ciri, who is expected to be the lead character in The Witcher 4. The title Songs of the Past has led to speculation that the expansion may explore events set before the main story of The Witcher 3, possibly even revisiting earlier periods in Geralt’s life or events connected to Ciri’s childhood. Another possibility is that the expansion could reach further back into the franchise’s timeline, before CD Projekt Red’s original Witcher trilogy began.
The choice to work with Fool’s Theory also adds interest to the project. The studio has become closely associated with the Witcher franchise through multiple roles, including its remake of the first game and its involvement in the next mainline entry. Its previous release, The Thaumaturge, showed its ability to deliver story-driven role-playing content with a distinct setting and tone.
CD Projekt Red says more information about Songs of the Past will be shared later this summer. For now, the announcement confirms that Geralt’s story is not finished and that The Witcher 3 will continue receiving major new content years after its original release. The expansion adds another significant chapter to one of the most acclaimed role-playing games of the modern era and renews interest in the wider future of the Witcher series.
