Tom Holland Hints at a “Special” Spider-Man and Punisher Dynamic in Brand New Day

Tom Holland says Spider-Man: Brand New Day will present a more mature, emotionally burdened Peter Parker as the MCU hero returns to live action after years away from the spotlight. Picking up in the aftermath of the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the film follows Peter after Doctor Strange erased everyone’s memory of his identity, forcing him to live anonymously while carrying the pain of separation from MJ and Ned. Although he continues his work as Spider-Man, the loneliness of that sacrifice weighs heavily on him. The story is framed as a new beginning, but one shaped by loss, responsibility, and the consequences of protecting others at great personal cost.
Holland says the movie explores Peter as someone who has grown up and changed since his last solo outing. The character is no longer the same teenager audiences first met in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Instead, Brand New Day reflects a hero who has lived through trauma, learned from it, and is trying to move forward while still dealing with the emotional fallout. Holland said he intentionally stepped away from the role for a period of time so that Peter could return with a sense of real evolution.
One of the film’s biggest new dynamics is Spider-Man’s relationship with The Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal. According to Holland, working with Bernthal was one of the highlights of the movie. He praised director Destin Daniel Cretton for encouraging the actors to shape the relationship beyond what was on the page. The result, Holland suggested, is a pairing that feels fresh, entertaining, and potentially recurring in the MCU. The contrast between Spider-Man’s humor and The Punisher’s grim, violent approach is expected to create a compelling tonal clash.
Brand New Day will also include other major characters and threats. The trailer teased the return of Bruce Banner, Michael Mando’s Scorpion, and the live-action debut of Tombstone, played by Marvin Jones III after appearing in the Spider-Verse animated franchise. Additional newcomers such as Sadie Sink, Tramell Tillman, and Liza Colón-Zayas remain mysterious. The film also appears to feature the Hand in some capacity, suggesting a broad mix of street-level action and larger MCU connections.
Despite the darker tone, Holland said the movie still preserves Spider-Man’s signature humor. He explained that the comedy is less about constant jokes and more about the awkward, high-pressure situations Peter finds himself in. He also emphasized that the film respects the emotional weight of No Way Home rather than treating it lightly. That balance between heartbreak and levity is central to the story.
A major theme of the film is community. Peter initially believes he has to handle everything alone because no one remembers him, but Holland said the movie ultimately reinforces the importance of friendship, support, and connection. He described that message as especially relevant for younger viewers in a digital age that can encourage isolation. Brand New Day aims to remind audiences that even superheroes need others, and that strength often comes from the people around them. The film opens in theaters on July 31, 2026.
