Power Ballad Made Me Feel Two Very Different Emotions

John Carney’s music-driven comedy Power Ballad brings both sharp satire and heartfelt emotion to the summer movie season. Starring Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas, the film centers on Rick Power, a former rocker who has settled into family life in Ireland and now fronts a wedding band, and Danny Wilson, a former boy band member trying to reinvent himself as a solo act. When the two meet at a wedding, their night of drinking, bonding, and jamming sets off a chain of events that changes both of their lives.

The movie’s most surprising quality is how bluntly it takes aim at boy bands and the idea of pop stardom. Although Jonas is himself one of the most recognizable figures from a modern boy band, the film does not soften its jokes or commentary. Instead, it leans into the awkwardness and egos that can come with trying to break away from a group identity and build a solo career. Danny Wilson is portrayed as charming but deeply flawed, and his decision to steal Rick’s song to jump-start his own career creates the central conflict. The performance adds real layers to the role, making him easy to understand even when he is difficult to like.

At the same time, the film is also a story about regret, family, and the roads not taken. Rick once gave up his dream of becoming a rock star when he chose marriage and fatherhood, and seeing his song become a global hit forces him to confront what he sacrificed. That emotional thread gives the film its warmth. As Rick reflects on his life as a husband and father, the movie becomes less about fame and more about the compromises people make in order to build a life with the ones they love.

The contrast between the film’s biting humor and its sentimental core is what makes Power Ballad stand out. It manages to be both funny and emotionally sincere, poking fun at the music industry while also honoring the emotional weight of missed opportunities and personal growth. Rudd brings empathy and grounded humor to Rick’s journey, while Jonas plays against type in a way that gives the story extra bite.

For viewers looking for something beyond action spectacle or horror this summer, Power Ballad offers a music-infused comedy with an emotional payoff. It is a story about ambition, identity, parenting, and the way music can connect people across very different lives. Now playing in select theaters, with a wider release coming next weekend, the film blends sharp laughs with a touching reflection on what it means to choose responsibility over dreams and still find meaning in the life that follows.
