Three Women Take on the Iconic Role of Cher in Theatre Royal Show

Three women are bringing different stages of Cher’s life to the stage in an upcoming musical that they all describe as a dream role. The Cher Show, presented by Theatre South Productions, will tell the story of the singer’s career through three distinct eras, combining high-energy choreography, glamorous costumes and a sharp script by Rick Elice.

Jenny Carmichael will portray Cher in her younger years, Aimee Gibson will represent the Sonny and Cher period, and Lizzie O’Hara Gibson will play the star at the height of her fame. The production will trace the transformation of one of pop music’s most recognisable figures across her rise to superstardom.

Lizzie, from Helensburgh, said she was stunned when she got the part and at first thought it was a joke. She said the role felt especially meaningful because it was being staged in an iconic theatre alongside two performers she admires. She described the experience as a dream come true for all three cast members.

Jenny, from Uddingston, said her admiration for Cher grew after researching the singer more deeply, which motivated her to audition. She said she spent the past year imagining the role, making it feel even more special when she was finally cast.

Aimee, also from Uddingston, said the part is her first principal role with the company and a major career moment. The three performers have become close during rehearsals and even created a group chat called Cherapy. They say the bond between them has added to the energy of the production.

The cast has been studying old interviews and performance clips to capture Cher’s voice, confidence and stage presence. Jenny said watching early footage of the star was surprising because her image changed so much over time. Aimee said she had not realised how funny Cher was until looking back at clips from The Sonny and Cher Show, noting that the singer was willing to laugh at herself. Lizzie said many of the lines in the musical come directly from Cher’s well-known quotes, which she believes audiences will recognise and enjoy.

The performers also learned more about Cher’s personal struggles, including dyslexia, a difficult adolescence and the bullying she faced. Jenny said the show offers a different perspective on the icon and reveals how she overcame hardship to build a lasting career. She said fans and non-fans alike would likely come away with a deeper appreciation of Cher’s resilience and determination.

The trio said it is both exciting and daunting to portray a real-life global star, but they are looking forward to performing at the Theatre Royal. The Cher Show will run from June 10 to 13, with tickets available through ATG Tickets.
