The Best Physical Media Releases of May 2026

Streaming services remain the dominant way many people consume music, television, and films, but rising subscription costs and limited libraries are driving some consumers back to physical media. Vinyl records, CDs, and 4K discs continue to attract buyers who prefer something tangible to own, especially when titles can disappear from streaming platforms without warning. The latest wave of releases reflects that demand, with labels and studios offering carefully packaged editions of classic albums and films, plus new restorations and anniversary editions aimed at collectors and longtime fans.
Among the standout film releases is Arrow Video’s limited edition 4K UHD of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, which presents both the theatrical and extended cuts in restored form along with commentaries, art cards, a poster, a booklet, and a making-of feature. Disney’s Alice in Wonderland arrives in 4K for the first time as part of its 75th anniversary celebration, accompanied by bonus materials including Walt Disney’s 1959 TV introduction, featurettes, reference footage, and a pencil test. Shout! Factory has upgraded Mamoru Hosoda’s Wolf Children to a limited edition 4K steelbook, highlighting the anime filmmaker’s artwork and including an interview with Hosoda. Criterion’s 4K edition of Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value features new artwork by Chris Ware, interviews with the cast and Trier, a conversation with Mike Mills, and a new essay by Karl Ove Knausgård.
Other notable movies getting deluxe physical releases include Disney’s Fight Club 4K steelbook, which packages the film with commentaries, deleted scenes, featurettes, and alternate artwork. Disney is also releasing Avatar: Fire and Ash in a collector’s edition with a disc of special features, including making-of content, a tribute to producer Jon Landau, a Miley Cyrus music video, and Na’vi-related material. Sony’s Scarlet 4K steelbook includes an interview with Hosoda, animation tests, and concept art, while Lionsgate’s Hearts of Darkness: The Art of Eleanor Coppola 4K collector’s edition gathers documentaries and shorts and restores Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse in 4K. Warner Brothers’ Speed Racer 4K steelbook marks a major reassessment of the Wachowskis’ once-misunderstood film, pairing its restoration with new behind-the-scenes content and an interview with the directors.
Music reissues are equally prominent. The Smashing Pumpkins’ Gish is back on vinyl in anniversary editions, including gray splatter and black 180-gram pressings housed in original 1991 packaging. The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds is being celebrated with multiple formats, including a limited Vinylphile 2LP set, a premium DSS edition, and a zoetrope pressing, alongside The Pet Sounds Sessions Highlights in both splatter and black vinyl. The Cranberries’ debut Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We? arrives in a deluxe 3LP edition with remastered audio, a new stereo mix, bonus material, expanded notes, and rare live and B-side content. Rhino High Fidelity is also reissuing the Grateful Dead’s Workingman’s Dead from the original master tapes, while Mobile Fidelity has produced a limited UltraDisc One-Step 45RPM box set of Van Halen’s 1984, pressed from analog masters and packaged as a premium audiophile release.
