Jill Biden Fears Joe Biden May Have Been Having a Stroke During 2024 Trump Debate
Dr. Jill Biden has revealed that she was deeply alarmed while watching President Joe Biden’s disastrous June 27, 2024 debate performance against Donald Trump, saying she initially feared he might be suffering a stroke or experiencing a serious medical emergency onstage. In an interview with CBS News Sunday Morning’s Rita Braver, set to air on May 31, the former first lady said she was frightened by what she saw and had never seen her husband behave that way before or since. Her comments come as she prepares to release her memoir, View from the East Wing, on June 2.
The memoir is expected to examine in detail the pressure surrounding Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race after widespread concern over his debate showing. At the time, the performance triggered immediate alarm among Democrats, donors, and political observers, many of whom publicly and privately urged him to end his campaign. After resisting calls to step aside, Biden announced on July 21, 2024, that he was leaving the race, paving the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to become the Democratic nominee.
Harris launched her campaign quickly, but despite an energetic start, she was unable to overcome Trump’s momentum in the general election. Trump ultimately defeated Harris in November 2024 and returned to the White House as the 47th president. Since taking office, Trump has continued to attack both Joe Biden and his administration, while Biden has largely remained out of the political spotlight amid reported health concerns. Even so, the former president has occasionally reemerged to criticize Trump’s leadership and warn about what he describes as authoritarian behavior.
Joe Biden has also recently begun making selective public appearances, including endorsing Democratic candidates ahead of this year’s midterm elections and offering remarks on the national stage. He was also among the figures publicly honoring Memorial Day this week. His upcoming schedule includes an appearance at the opening of Barack Obama’s Presidential Center in Chicago next month, and he is expected to publish his own memoir in the near future.
Dr. Biden’s candid comments add a new personal dimension to the political fallout from one of the most damaging debate performances by a sitting president in modern American history. While she publicly supported her husband throughout the campaign’s collapse, her interview suggests the moment was far more alarming in private than previously known. The memoir and television interview are likely to renew debate over Biden’s health, his campaign decision-making, and the role of family members during the final phase of his 2024 presidential bid.
