French Open 2026 results: Novak Djokovic loses to Joao Fonseca in third-round thriller

Novak Djokovic was stunned in Paris after 18-year-old Brazilian talent Joao Fonseca produced a memorable comeback to beat the seven-time Grand Slam champion in a dramatic five-set battle on Court Philippe-Chatrier. Djokovic started strongly on another hot afternoon, breaking Fonseca in the opening game and taking control early by earning a 2-0 lead in sets. He mixed solid serving with flashes of brilliance, including a crowd-pleasing rally in the second set where he chased down a drop shot and finished with a forehand winner while encouraging the Philippe-Chatrier crowd to rise with him.
Djokovic’s momentum, however, faded as the match wore on. Although he had briefly lost serve in the first set, he recovered quickly and looked in command through the opening two sets. But his level dropped in the third, and unlike in an earlier match against Valentin Royer, he was unable to regain control. Frustration began to show as he repeatedly voiced his displeasure toward himself and his coaching team. Signs of fatigue were visible throughout the third and fourth sets, with Djokovic leaning over his towel box in exhaustion between points.
Fonseca, meanwhile, grew into the contest with confidence and power. The teenager unleashed booming forehands and repeatedly used drop shots to unsettle Djokovic, gradually shifting the match in his favor. After a lengthy break before the deciding set, Djokovic responded with renewed intensity and managed to break Fonseca in the fourth game of the fifth set, appearing to seize the initiative once more. Yet Fonseca, playing only the third fifth set of his career, handled the pressure with remarkable composure.
As the decisive set reached its peak, Fonseca elevated his game significantly. After managing only 13 winners in the first two sets combined, he struck 22 winners in the fifth alone, compared with Djokovic’s 14. He also delivered three drop-shot winners in rapid succession, drawing strained smiles from the Serbian veteran as the teenager closed in on victory. The key moment came at 5-5, when Fonseca secured the decisive break to move within one game of the match.
Djokovic still had one final chance, earning his 16th break point as Fonseca served for the match. But the Brazilian responded with nerves of steel, firing three consecutive aces to seal a stunning comeback on his first attempt. The victory marked a breakthrough moment for Fonseca and a major upset for Djokovic, whose experience and early control were ultimately undone by the teenager’s resilience, shot-making, and fearless finishing under pressure.
