Quentin Tarantino Says He Has Never Seen the 1965 Masterpiece

Quentin Tarantino is widely regarded as one of cinema’s most knowledgeable filmmakers, known for building his movies from a dense web of references to earlier films, genres, characters, music, and memorable lines. His work is often described as highly referential, yet it also carries a strong personal style that has made “Tarantino-esque” a recognizable term in film culture. His long-standing obsession with cinema began well before he became a director, shaped in part by his years working in a video rental store in the 1980s, where he immersed himself in a huge range of titles from obscure B-movies to major classics.

Despite his reputation as a film obsessive, Tarantino has admitted to one notable blind spot: he has never seen The Sound of Music. The 1965 musical remains one of the most famous and commercially successful films of all time, starring Julie Andrews as Maria, the governess who brings music and order to the von Trapp household in Austria during the political turmoil leading up to the Anschluss. With songs such as “My Favourite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” and “So Long, Farewell,” the film became a global cultural landmark, spending months at the top of the box office and earning lasting affection from audiences across generations.

Tarantino’s admission came during an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, where he was asked to name the biggest movie he had never seen. His answer surprised many viewers, especially given his deep familiarity with film history. The revelation is striking not because Tarantino avoids musicals altogether, but because The Sound of Music is such a defining title in the genre. He has previously praised Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story as “a true cinematic spectacle,” suggesting that he is open to musical cinema and likely familiar with other major works in the category.

The contrast between Tarantino’s encyclopedic film knowledge and this specific gap highlights a broader truth about movie culture: even the most devoted film lovers have blind spots. With thousands of films spanning different eras, languages, and genres, it is impossible for any one person to see everything. Tarantino may be one of the most movie-literate directors working today, but his admission that he has never watched The Sound of Music shows that even the biggest experts can miss a few beloved classics.
