Prannoy Stuns Jonatan Christie in Singapore Open Opener; Malvika Bansod and Kidambi Srikanth Exit

Indian shuttler H.S. Prannoy produced one of the biggest results of the opening day at the Singapore Open on Wednesday, defeating fifth-ranked Jonatan Christie of Indonesia 10-21, 21-12, 21-18 in a first-round men’s singles match. After losing the opening game heavily, Prannoy recovered strongly to dominate the second and hold his nerve in a close decider to advance in the Super 750 event.
There was disappointment for Malvika Bansod, who exited in the women’s singles first round after going down to Chinese Taipei’s Lin Hsiang-Ti 21-11, 19-21, 12-21. Bansod started well in the second game and forced a decider, but could not sustain the momentum as Lin closed out the match.
India also had mixed results in other draws. In mixed doubles, Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto moved into the next round with a hard-fought win over Malaysia’s Wong Tien Ci and Lim Chiew Sien. The Indian pair prevailed 21-14, 20-22, 21-13, showing resilience after narrowly dropping the second game before finishing strongly in the third.
Kidambi Srikanth bowed out in the men’s singles first round after a three-game defeat to Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew. Srikanth lost 22-20, 19-21, 21-17 in a closely contested encounter that went the distance, but he was unable to convert the tight finish in his favour.
Lakshya Sen was scheduled to face China’s Lu Guangzu later in the day, keeping India’s challenge alive in the tournament. His match was one of the remaining key fixtures for the Indian contingent as the opening round continued.
The Singapore Open, a Super 750 badminton tournament, featured a mixed start for India, with Prannoy’s upset victory providing the standout performance of the session. The result underlined his ability to battle back under pressure against one of the tournament’s top seeds, while the exits of Bansod and Srikanth reflected the tough competition across singles draws.
Kapila and Crasto’s win added another positive note for India, especially in the mixed doubles category, where consistency and coordination proved decisive in the final game. Their victory ensured India had representation in the later rounds of the event despite setbacks elsewhere.
The day highlighted both the depth and the challenges of Indian badminton at a high-level international competition. Prannoy’s comeback win and the mixed doubles success offered encouragement, while the early departures of Bansod and Srikanth showed the margin for error remains small at this level.
