Netflix Develops Sequel to One of Its Most-Streamed Original Movies

Netflix is moving ahead with a sequel to its action thriller War Machine only a few months after the film’s debut, according to Variety. The follow-up is in development after the movie became one of the streamer’s biggest original hits, drawing strong viewership and enough momentum to justify continuing the story.

War Machine is a sci-fi action thriller with clear echoes of Predator. The story follows a group of soldiers struggling to survive against a deadly machine that crash-lands in the middle of a training exercise. The film mixes military action, survival tension, and science-fiction spectacle, giving Netflix another large-scale original designed for broad audience appeal.

The cast includes Alan Ritchson, Dennis Quaid, Stephan King James, Jai Courtney, and Esai Morales. When it premiered on Netflix in March, the movie received mostly positive reviews from critics, many of whom praised it as an old-school action thriller with plenty of explosive set pieces. Reviews also highlighted Ritchson’s performance as a major strength, noting that his screen presence helped carry the film even when other elements were less polished.

Despite some criticism that the film could be slow to build and visually plain at times, the overall reception was strong enough to support its success. Empire described it as a loud, chaotic action ride that was more entertaining than expected, while IGN said the movie’s appeal came largely from Ritchson’s charisma. That combination of critical attention and audience interest helped fuel the sequel decision.

Netflix’s internal numbers were especially impressive. The film reportedly became one of the platform’s most-streamed original titles, reaching 139 million views. That level of performance appears to have made a sequel a natural next step for the streamer, which has increasingly leaned on high-performing franchises to keep subscribers engaged.

Patrick Hughes, who directed the original film, is set to return for the sequel. He will also co-write the new installment with James Beaufort. In addition, Hughes will produce the project alongside Todd Lieberman and Alex Young through Hidden Pictures, with Range Media Partners’ Rich Cook also involved in producing. The returning creative team suggests Netflix is aiming to preserve the tone and style that made the first film successful.

At this stage, it remains unclear whether any members of the original cast will come back for the sequel, including Ritchson, who anchored the first movie. The ending of War Machine left room for another chapter, but Netflix has not yet confirmed casting details. A release date has also not been announced, so the sequel is still in early development.

For now, the project shows Netflix doubling down on a film that clearly connected with viewers. With strong streaming numbers, solid reviews, and a familiar action-heavy formula, War Machine is now set to continue as a potential franchise for the platform.
