Multiple people shot, 1 dead as Texas police standoff with mass shooting suspect continues

About a dozen people were shot Friday morning in Midland, Texas, triggering an hours-long standoff that ended with the suspected shooter dead, according to local officials. Mayor Lori Blong said authorities had identified 11 known victims, with at least one person dead at the scene. Police later confirmed that the active shooter situation had ended and that the shooter was deceased.
Midland Police Chief Greg Snow said officers heard gunfire coming from a building in the 4600 block of West Wall Street and quickly moved to secure and clear the area. Earlier in the morning, Snow said efforts were underway to bring the standoff to a safe resolution.
Midland Memorial Hospital received nine victims from the scene, according to spokesperson Tasa Richardson. She said four patients were taken into the operating room while five were stable. The hospital entered lockdown around 8:20 a.m. CT because of the active shooter event. The main campus lockdown was lifted by 10:10 a.m., but the emergency department remained locked down until further notice. Richardson urged people to stay away from the hospital unless they needed emergency care, calling it an active situation.
Midland is located in West Texas, roughly halfway between Fort Worth and El Paso. Authorities have not released details about the suspect or a possible motive. The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to account for the victims and determine what led to the shooting.
