Facebook outage: Messenger and app hit by major service disruption

Facebook experienced a major outage that disrupted access to the main app, website, and Messenger, leaving many users unable to log in. People who tried to use the service reported being automatically logged out and shown error messages such as “an unexpected error occurred” or “something went wrong,” with Facebook indicating that it was working to fix the issue.

The outage appeared to affect Facebook more directly than other Meta platforms. Instagram and WhatsApp remained mostly online, although some Instagram web users reported problems as well. Because Meta’s consumer products do not have an official public status page, the scale of the disruption was largely tracked through user reports and outage-monitoring services.

Downdetector, which compiles reports from users experiencing service interruptions, showed a sharp spike in problems beginning around 6:45 a.m. Pacific time, or 2:45 p.m. in the United Kingdom. The outage was reported across multiple regions, suggesting a widespread global issue rather than a localized technical failure.

At the time of reporting, Meta had not posted a detailed public explanation for the outage. The company’s business-tools status page also did not appear to reflect the disruption. The timing of the Downdetector outage itself added to confusion, since the site seemed to experience issues around the same period, though it was not immediately clear whether that was related to Facebook’s problems.

The incident highlighted how dependent users and businesses are on Meta’s platforms for communication, networking, and account access. Even a short interruption can affect millions of people at once, especially when login systems fail and users are locked out of both mobile apps and desktop services.

Users around the world described similar experiences, including sudden sign-outs, failed connection attempts, and repeated error notices. While the outage seemed to ease for some users over time, the initial disruption was significant enough to draw widespread attention online.
