La Previa: Dreaming of Sealing Qualification in Brazil

Platense will visit Corinthians this Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. at Neo Química Arena in São Paulo in the final round of the 2026 CONMEBOL Libertadores group stage. The match will be officiated by Venezuelan referee Alexis Herrera Hernández and will be broadcast on Fox Sports and Disney+ Premium.

Platense enters the decisive match with a chance to qualify for the round of 16 for the first time in its history. The team from Vicente López will face Corinthians in its last Group E game knowing that a win guarantees second place and direct qualification. A draw could still be enough, but only if Independiente Santa Fe fails to beat Peñarol by two goals in Uruguay, where both matches will be played at the same time. If Platense loses and Santa Fe wins, Walter Zunino’s side would finish third and move on to the 16th-finals of the Copa Sudamericana.

The Group E standings before the final matchday are led by Corinthians with 11 points from five games, followed by Platense with seven, Independiente Santa Fe with five and Peñarol with three. Corinthians already secured first place after drawing 1-1 with Peñarol in its previous continental outing. In domestic competition, the Brazilian club comes from a 1-0 win over Atlético Mineiro, a result that helped it move out of the relegation zone in the Brasileirao after overtaking Vasco da Gama and Santos.

For this match, Platense coach Walter Zunino named a 25-player squad, with four changes compared to the list that traveled to Colombia. Víctor Cuesta returns to the call-up, while Thiago Currado, Guido Mainero, Benjamín Bosch and Augusto Lotti were left out. Mainero is suspended and Lotti is ruled out because of a medical issue. The club also reported several players in its medical bulletin, including Gonzalo Goñi, Agustín Ocampo, Celías Ingenthron, Brian Bustos, Augusto Lotti, Tomás Nasif and Franco Minerva, all dealing with different injuries or recoveries.

This will be the second meeting in the history between Platense and Corinthians. The sides played last month in Vicente López, where the Brazilian team won 2-0. Platense now seeks a different result in São Paulo, with its continental future on the line.

Alexis Herrera Hernández, a 36-year-old Venezuelan referee, will oversee Platense for the second time in this competition. He also officiated the team’s 2-1 win over Independiente Santa Fe at home. Platense supporters will be located in sector 416, the Sur Visitante section of the stadium. The match will be available on FOX Sports through cable providers and on Disney+ Premium via streaming.
