Kylian Mbappé Faces Cristiano Ronaldo-Style ‘Superstar’ Challenge at Real Madrid as Former Teammate Hits Back at ‘Arrogant’ Criticism

Rafael van der Vaart has drawn a comparison between Kylian Mbappe’s situation at Real Madrid and the period when Cristiano Ronaldo was the club’s dominant star. Speaking from his experience of playing alongside Ronaldo in the Spanish capital, Van der Vaart said that having one “mega-star” in the squad can change the way a team plays, sometimes disrupting the collective rhythm.
According to Van der Vaart, this effect is part of the pressure Mbappe is facing now. He argued that in a club as demanding as Real Madrid, criticism falls heavily on the biggest names whenever results do not go as expected. He said Ronaldo was also often blamed when the team failed to win, despite his extraordinary output on the pitch.
Van der Vaart explained that the presence of a single superstar can influence passing decisions and reduce flexibility in attack. He recalled that, as a number ten, he sometimes had better options available, but players would still look for Ronaldo on the left side because of his status and importance. In his view, that kind of tactical gravity can be harmful if it becomes too predictable or if the team relies too heavily on one player.
At the same time, Van der Vaart stressed that elite goalscorers of Ronaldo’s and Mbappe’s level can also justify that attention. He pointed out that Ronaldo regularly produced around 60 goals per season, and said Mbappe is now doing something similar. For that reason, he believes the challenge for Real Madrid is not simply having a superstar, but managing the balance so the team can still function effectively around him.
His comments reflect a broader debate about how clubs with global stars structure their attack. While a world-class player can decide matches through individual brilliance, teams must also ensure that their overall play does not become too dependent on one name. Van der Vaart’s assessment suggests that Mbappe’s current role at Real Madrid is shaped by the same kind of expectations, scrutiny and tactical focus that defined Ronaldo’s era at the club.
The message from Van der Vaart is clear: big stars bring goals, attention and decisive moments, but they can also create complexity for teammates and coaches. In his view, Real Madrid have faced this before, and Mbappe is now experiencing a similar reality as he settles into life at one of football’s most demanding clubs.
