King Honors Anne and Sophie’s Trusted Ladies-in-Waiting

Two women closely associated with the households of the Princess Royal and the Duchess of Edinburgh have been recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours for their service to the Royal Family.

Annabelle Galletley, who serves as Assistant Private Secretary and Lady-in-Waiting to the Duchess of Edinburgh, has been appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO). Leonora, Countess of Lichfield, has been made a Dame Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (DCVO).

The Royal Victorian Order is a personal honour bestowed by the Sovereign and is awarded to people who have given distinguished service to the Monarch and the Royal Family. Unlike many honours that are granted on the advice of ministers, appointments to this order are made directly by the King and reflect personal recognition for service to the Royal Household.

Mrs Galletley is one of the longest-serving members of the Duchess of Edinburgh’s household. She has worked with Sophie for more than 30 years and has supported her throughout much of her royal career. Over the years, she has accompanied the Duchess on engagements in the United Kingdom and overseas, while also helping to manage the day-to-day work of her private office behind the scenes. Her promotion to Commander follows her earlier appointment as a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order in 2014, marking another step in recognition of her long service.

The Countess of Lichfield’s honour also reflects a long connection with the Royal Family. Lady Lichfield was married to the late Patrick Lichfield, the celebrated photographer and cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. She has remained involved in royal and charitable circles for many years and continues to be a familiar figure within those networks.

The recognition of both women highlights the King’s emphasis on honouring those who support the Royal Family away from public attention. Their awards form part of this year’s Birthday Honours, which included other members of the Royal Household as well.

Among those also recognised was Dr Robert Hywel Thomas, the King’s Clinical Radiologist, who was appointed a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. Jacqueline Fergusson, who serves as Royal Florist to the Royal Household, received the Royal Victorian Order. Together, the honours acknowledge a range of service roles that contribute to the functioning of the Royal Household and the wider duties of the monarchy.
