Kathy Hilton Steps Down as WeHo Pride Grand Marshal After Backlash Over Trump Ties and Homophobic Slur

Kathy Hilton is no longer serving as grand marshal for the West Hollywood Pride Parade after facing swift backlash over the City of West Hollywood’s announcement of her role. The city had said last week on Instagram that the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star would lead the WeHo Pride event on Sunday, but the choice quickly drew criticism online. Many commenters pointed to Hilton’s past ties to Donald Trump and said her selection did not reflect the values many in the LGBTQ+ community expect from a Pride celebration. Others also resurfaced allegations from her RHOBH co-star Erika Jayne, who accused Hilton of using a homophobic slur, an allegation Hilton has denied.
In a statement released Wednesday, Hilton said she was honored to have been considered and explained that her intention was to celebrate and support a community that means a great deal to many people. She said Pride is about uplifting LGBTQ+ voices, experiences, and achievements, and noted that she remains committed to LGBTQ+ causes and visibility. Hilton referenced her participation in GLAAD initiatives and events, along with her support for organizations including the Elton John AIDS Foundation, the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation, Dr. Mathilde Krim, God’s Love We Deliver, and Project Angel Food.
Hilton added that her support for the LGBTQ+ community and for WeHo Pride is “unwavering.” She recalled serving as grand marshal of the LA Pride parade in 2005 alongside her daughter and thanked those who work to make Pride events happen. She ended by wishing the community love, joy, and a successful WeHo Pride weekend.
The City of West Hollywood also responded, thanking Hilton for her grace and her continued support of the LGBTQ+ community. In its statement, the city said Pride is strongest when it genuinely reflects the community and that WeHo Pride is strengthened by open dialogue, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to inclusion. Officials said they remain dedicated to making the event a joyful celebration centered on visibility, belonging, and respect, while welcoming conversations that help the event evolve and stay true to its history and purpose.
The controversy highlights the scrutiny that public figures face when selected for visible Pride roles, especially when their past associations or remarks are seen as conflicting with the event’s mission. Hilton’s withdrawal appears intended to calm tensions and allow the celebration to move forward without further division.
