Glad to See Star Wars’ Zeb in The Mandalorian and Grogu, But I Have One Concern
The first new Star Wars movie since 2019, The Mandalorian and Grogu, continues the story of Din Djarin and Grogu as they carry out missions for the New Republic. Directed and co-written by Jon Favreau, the film blends the franchise’s classic adventure style with newer elements from Star Wars lore, including the return of Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios, a fan-favorite character first introduced in Star Wars Rebels. Zeb’s live-action appearance has been welcomed by longtime viewers, but his role in the film has also drawn mixed reactions because it is relatively small.
In the story, Zeb is now part of the New Republic Defense Fleet and becomes involved with Din and Grogu during their missions. He helps raid the compound of Imperial faction leader Janu Coin and take him down, but his major action scenes are limited. Later, he reappears near the end of the third act, arriving with a New Republic squadron to help destroy the Hutt Twins’ palace and droid forces on Nal Hutta. Despite these moments, the character spends much of the film on the sidelines, which may disappoint fans hoping for a bigger showcase.
The limited use of Zeb stands out because the character has a strong presence and a loyal following from Rebels, where he became one of the series’ most popular members of the Ghost crew. His live-action debut in The Mandalorian Season 3, with Steve Blum returning as the voice, was a notable moment for fans who wanted more animated characters to cross into live action. In The Mandalorian and Grogu, however, his involvement feels functional rather than central, with much of the narrative focused on the title duo and their bond.
Even so, there is reason to think Zeb’s story in live action may not be over. The Mandalorian Season 4 was reportedly scrapped in favor of the film, but other Star Wars projects are still in development, including Ahsoka Season 2. Since Ahsoka already features other Rebels characters such as Sabine Wren, Hera Syndulla and Ezra Bridger, it would make sense for Zeb to appear there as well. With plot details being kept secret, the series could provide a natural reunion for the Ghost crew and a stronger role for the Lasat warrior.
For now, The Mandalorian and Grogu gives fans a chance to see Zeb on the big screen, even if his part is smaller than expected. The film is in theaters now, while viewers can also revisit The Mandalorian and Star Wars Rebels on Disney+.
