Diamondbacks’ Arenado listed day-to-day after leaving win over Giants with groin tightness

Arizona third baseman Nolan Arenado exited the Diamondbacks’ 7-5 win over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night after experiencing tightness in his right groin. He left the game in the seventh inning and was replaced by Jose Fernandez at third base. Arenado went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored before leaving, and the team said the decision was made out of caution.
Manager Torey Lovullo said the club chose to be smart with the injury and described Arenado as day to day. Lovullo said the team would monitor how Arenado feels overnight and again the next morning, but he expressed confidence that the veteran infielder should be fine. Arenado also said after the game that he felt the groin tighten in the second inning while running from first to home, then noticed it worsen in the sixth inning when he beat out a grounder to reach first base.
Arenado said he did not feel a pull, and the issue appeared to be precautionary rather than serious. He is not scheduled to undergo imaging on the groin, suggesting the Diamondbacks do not believe the injury is severe enough to require immediate testing.
The 10-time Gold Glove winner and eight-time All-Star is in his first season with Arizona after being acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in January, along with $31 million, in exchange for right-hander Jack Martinez. Through the early part of the season, Arenado is batting .271 with seven home runs and 27 RBIs, continuing to provide steady production for Arizona.
His exit was the main injury concern in a game the Diamondbacks won to improve their position in the standings, but early indications point to a minor issue rather than a long-term setback. The team will continue to evaluate him before deciding when he can return to the lineup.
