Florentino Pérez Pledges €150 Million as Real Madrid Election Promise

Real Madrid’s presidential election is set to draw major attention as club members prepare to vote on Sunday. The club is owned entirely by its members, known as socios, who each pay an annual fee of about £130 and hold the power to choose the president. Nearly 100,000 members are expected to take part in the vote, making the contest one of the most significant decisions in European football governance.

Florentino Perez, who first won the presidency in 2000, built his early reputation on the “Galacticos” model, signing global stars such as Luis Figo, David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane. That approach brought success on the pitch, including two La Liga titles and a Champions League, before Perez stepped down in 2006 after results fell short of expectations.

Perez returned in 2009 and has since remained in power through successive unopposed elections, extending a second spell that has now lasted 17 years. However, the mood around the club has changed after Real Madrid finished the 2025-26 season without a major trophy for the second year in a row, and also trailed Barcelona by eight points in the league race. The disappointing campaign increased scrutiny on Perez and opened the door to a real challenge for the presidency for the first time in two decades.

As the season ended, Perez held a news conference in which he defended his leadership and criticized the club’s critics, effectively challenging any dissatisfied members to stand against him. Renewable energy businessman Riquelme then emerged as a rival candidate, setting up a contested election and forcing Perez to defend his record directly.

This week, Perez attempted to rally support by promising a dramatic transfer move if he is re-elected. In an interview with Spanish television program Horizonte on Wednesday, he said Real Madrid would soon submit a record-breaking offer for a major Champions League player. He described the planned deal as the biggest fee in the club’s history and said the target would be a midfielder capable of driving forward play. Perez ruled out several rumored names, saying the player was not Michael Olise, Jérémy Doku, or Erling Haaland, and added that the signing would not come from the Premier League.

Perez said the move would be designed to create excitement among supporters and restore momentum around the club. He also said that a successful re-election would activate previously agreed plans involving manager Jose Mourinho, Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konate, whose Liverpool contract is expected to expire without renewal.

The vote now carries broad implications for Real Madrid’s direction, both on and off the field. Members will decide whether to continue with Perez’s long-running leadership and renewed transfer ambitions, or back an alternative vision after a trophyless season that has raised pressure on the club’s most powerful figure.
