Driver slows immediately at sight of police after being caught 100 km/h over the limit in France’s Aisne region

A motorist in France’s Aisne department was stopped after being clocked at 219 km/h on the RN42 near Urcel, where the speed limit is 110 km/h. The excess speed was detected on the evening of Thursday, June 11, 2026, during a roadside operation by the Laon motorized brigade, according to the Aisne gendarmerie. The driver was overtaking several vehicles when officers recorded the speed. Once he noticed the gendarmes, he immediately slowed down, but his driving license was taken on the spot, he was arrested, and he was placed in custody. His car was seized and sent to an impound lot. He was later brought before a judge after being questioned.
Authorities said the man was already known for similar offenses committed in 2022 and had been wanted for failing to respond to a judicial summons at the time. As a result of the latest case, he received a substantial fine, a six-month ban on driving in France, and a road safety awareness course. Police used the incident to warn the public about the dangers of extreme speeding, noting that at such a speed a driver covers more than 60 meters every second, leaving almost no time to react to hazards, traffic changes, or sudden braking by other vehicles.
The gendarmerie emphasized that speed does not save time when it reduces the ability to respond safely. The case highlights ongoing enforcement efforts against dangerous driving on major roads in the Aisne region and underscores the serious legal consequences that can follow repeated high-speed violations.
