Costume Designer Qween Jean Becomes First Openly Trans Tony Award Winner

Qween Jean made Tony Awards history on Sunday night as the first openly trans woman ever to win a Tony Award, taking home the prize for costume design for Cats: The Jellicle Ball. The win marks a major milestone for Broadway and for trans visibility in theater, adding a new first to the Tony Awards’ long history.

Jean’s victory also comes with the possibility of another historic moment later in the evening. She is nominated in a second category, Best Costume Design for a Play, for her work on Liberation. If she wins again, it would further cement her as one of the standout artists of the night.

Although several non-binary performers have won Tonys before, Jean is the first trans winner in the awards’ history. Her achievement was immediately recognized as a landmark moment for the theater community, particularly in an industry where representation and inclusion have been ongoing conversations.

Accepting the award, Jean stepped onto the stage in a ruffled lavender gown and opened with a spirited “Happy Pride!” before addressing the crowd. She described theater makers as “architects of imagination” and said the moment felt deeply meaningful. Jean spoke about the importance of making room for queer and trans people in the arts, saying they must “take up space” and help “shift the paradigm.”

Her remarks framed the award not only as a personal honor, but also as part of a larger cultural moment for LGBTQ+ artists and audiences. The speech underscored the role of live theater as a space for visibility, creativity, and change, while celebrating the legacy of queer and trans contributions to the stage.

Jean’s win for Cats: The Jellicle Ball highlights the production’s strong creative impact and places her among the evening’s most notable winners. With her second nomination still pending, her Tony night may not be over yet, but her historic victory has already secured her place in Tony Awards history.
